The Goals of the Cosmetology Program

The Cosmetology Program (total skin, nail and hair care) of Manatee Technical Institute is a specialized, post secondary and secondary program designed to provide job preparatory training to residents in our community.

The cosmetology program is available to all on a non-discriminatory basis. The program is directly related to the needs, interests and abilities of the persons to be trained and follows all state rules and regulations of the Board of Cosmetology.

The Requirements for Program Completion

To obtain a Certificate of Completion or Diploma and graduate from the program, a student must do the following:

  • Successfully score on the TABE Test, a grade level 9 in Reading and a grade level 8 in Math and Language
  • Complete the required hours mandated by the Florida State Board
  • Complete the services required by the FSB
  • Pass all theory tests with a 75% or higher grade
  • Pass all practical tests with a 75% or higher grade
  • Pass all the final examinations with a score of 75% or higher
  • Have met all financial or other obligations to MTI and the Manatee School Board
  • Properly fill out an OCP Card and obtain the required signatures of staff and instructors on it.
    • Before an instructor can sign off on the OCP, the student tracking form must be completed with all the test grades and practical work.
    • Each student has an OCP card and it MUST be filled out completely before a Certificate of Completion can be issued for a student.

Activities of Students
  

Students will participate in:

  • Theory class by
    1. Homework
    2. Asking and answering questions
    3. Passing required safety and chapter tests
    4. Doing other assigned classroom activities
  • Practical class by
    1. Working on mannequins
    2. Working on each other
    3. Doing required services
    4. Doing required paperwork
    5. Passing required tests
  • A live clinical situation
    1. To be a receptionist
    2. To be a dispensary person
    3. To work on the paying public doing services needed
    4. To correctly clean, sanitize and decontaminate the area

The Instructors' Goals

 

  1. Provide students an opportunity to develop to their fullest potential so that growth is evident in attitudes, work habits and occupational competencies.
  2. Provide an opportunity for students to develop and improve occupational proficiencies through special activities including clinical experiences, related instruction and customer service.
  3. Assist graduating and graduated students in securing employment.

Activities of Instructors
 

Instructors will:

  • Teach theory instruction
  • Teach practical instruction
  • Work students in a clinic situation
  • Observe, grade and counsel students
  • Prepare lesson plans
  • Participate in:
    1. Advisory Board meetings
    2. Staff meetings and
    3. Other necessary functions
  • Do paper work needed by the office staff
  • Run their classroom efficiently and effectively
  • Do all other things as deemed necessary
